Change outputs and the notes you should write the same day
Change is where offline ledgers rot. A two-line note written on the spend day prevents years of confusion.
Spends that return change are ordinary. Remembering which new output is “yours coming back” is not ordinary once months pass. The fix is unglamorous: the same day you spend, add two lines to the offline ledger — the payment out, and the change in — with amounts and a pointer to the parent transaction you already understand.
We see audits delayed by months because change sat unlabeled while the payment line looked complete. Your future self is not a mind reader. Neither is an heir. Write the change while the fee rate and destination are still in short-term memory.
If you already have a pile of unlabeled leftovers, a UTXO Ledger Audit can sort them — but the cheaper habit is the same-day note.
